A SHOCKING STORY OF LOVE AND LOSS
Fatal and Melancholy Affair
The tragic tale of Laura Schafer and Charles Tennesson.
Here's something sweet: Laura Schafer's father was a confectioner. Considering the house now haunted by his daughter is a popular candy store off Market Square, there's a fair amount of ghostly synergy happening here. Plus this: Schafer's father was a German immigrant, according to census records. And Candida Kreb, owner of Candi's Candies, is from Central America.
Clearly, there's something going on here.
Kreb says she's had several run-ins with the ghost, and describes the story as similar in many ways to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." But she's not alone. A handful of ghost tour guides say they've had their own experiences. Perhaps you are one of them. Have you had any experiences here? Have you heard anything strange happening here?

I was asked if I thought my experience was a ghostly encounter or just too much potpourri? Here's my response:
ReplyDeleteAye, that's the question. The floors up there were not level (thus the "fun house effect") and there was a lot of potpourri going on. But I was startled to find myself wanting out of there NOW, that is not like me at all. The feeling came over me all of a sudden, too. I keep an open mind about ghosts, one hears lots of stories as a ghost tour, but it was an odd experience. I have been up on the second floor twice since, both for Halloween tours sans potpourri. One year there was nothing up there, very spooky. The year after, it was an office suite, still a bit creepy. Last year we weren't allowed to go up there, so I told my Halloween tour story on the steps. I still get that feeling of longing, of life unfulfilled in there. The downstairs has lots of action in the candy store, and yet the rest of the building has a silent, watching quality.
I didn't enjoy the Halloween tours when we went up to the second floor. With all the people crammed, it got very hot, very quickly...which I guess is actually kind of parallel to how Laura must have felt.
ReplyDeleteI myself have never had any experiences with Laura or the Candy Store..but you should ask Brynn what happened to her candle last season...kind of freaky!
